Allow us to introduce ourselves. Luiz and Darlene Gutierrez are a husband and wife team with over thirty years of experience in photography. Luiz, a former college English professor, cut his photographic teeth documenting life in Appalachia while doing anti-poverty work in the 70’s. Darlene brings business and technical skills from former careers in higher education and business, as well as her own photographic style.
Our passion for truth and our interest in people have led to a new direction in our life, the business of photography. Our work strives to reflect with integrity the inner spirit and outer appearance of what we see.
Whether we photograph you in our fully-equipped studio, outdoors by natural light, on location at your favorite garden spot, or during that special moment at your wedding, our philosophy is the same. We take the time to seek some insight into you before presenting you to the world as you are, or as you wish to appear. After we get to know each other a little, we will photograph you in the style of your choice. This is your portrait.
We find wedding photography exciting and challenging. Our work also includes documenting events such as theater performances, family reunions, retirement parties, and any special occasions which lend themselves to documentary coverage or reportage. At these events, our purpose is to capture and convey a sense of the mood and feeling of the occasion, as well as faithfully recording who was there and what took place.
Luiz and Darlene live with two sons, a dog, two cats, countless squirrels, beautiful hummingbirds, and, unfortunately, a few moles, on five acres in the Northern Sierra. Our deck faces two magnificent mountain peaks: sunrise on Claremont, and sunset on Spanish Peak. We try to live in harmony with the rhythms of nature, especially reflected in Darlene’s intensive garden and beekeeping, and Luiz’s incredible never-ending attempt to transform his corner of a coniferous national forest into a deciduous park. Our abiding love of the natural world is reflected in the vastness of landscapes, the intimacy of flowers, as well as much in between, which are offered for your pleasure in this gallery.
While it may not be possible to smell the roses, do stop for awhile to rest your eye and empty your mind of its usual chatter by enjoying what you see here. And if your eye should light upon something particularly pleasing, one click of a button will make it yours, and a joy forever.
